The Schwing 88 is the long-awaited new model from highly successful designer James Hammond.

The good news is: Sports models have just turned high performance! In partnership with Sloperacer, James has been developing and refining his previous designs, which have gained him a worldwide following for their wide-ranging flying ability and sweet handling. We are now very happy to announce the first result of this R&D: The new all-rounder, Schwing 88. It's now out of the prototype stage after undergoing flight-testing by some of the best slope pilots in the UK, and from the first few flights it has exceeded our expectations.
So whether you just want a fun model to keep in the back of the car, a budding racer or a plane to fly anything from the merest whiff to howling gale, keep an eye out for the upcoming Schwing 88. After all, its predecessor the Typhoon 2M was arguably the best in its class, and the Schwing is definitely an improvement in almost every department!
"It took a while to get there and a huge amount of testing, because I wanted a series of sections that would make slow speed handling even slower, and high speed capability even faster and that meant doing radical things with the back of the section"
Overall design
James definitely has an eye for a pretty design, but the Schwing is so much more. At a handy 2.23M or 88'' span, it has a high aspect ratio, optimized wing plan form and completely new wind tunnel tested airfoils. Oh yes, it's slim, but well designed so that the layout has just enough room to allow plenty of ballast in the fuse and optional ballast in the wings too.

Aerofoils
The sections are the latest development from James's highly successful original Aerofoil designs, and as he says 'these are the good sections I kept back!'
To quote James: "It took a while to get there and a huge amount of testing, because I wanted a series of sections that would make slow speed handling even slower, and high speed capability even faster and that meant doing radical things with the back of the section."

Wings
With thickness-graded sections designed to reflex as well as to droop, the airfoils used on the wing were specifically designed with all round sport flying in mind and are pretty aerobatic too - but have the secret advantage of being able to carry high ballast loads. The descending thickness will let you go from really slow landing speeds with the flaps down to blistering passes with a little reflex, yet the plane will thermal away with the best of them.
Large ailerons, large flaps and a semi elliptical wing plan form all add to the overall flight envelope of the plane and needless to say the Schwing is available in glass or full carbon lay up options. Spars are impressively huge which is always a telling indication of what this wing is designed to do!

Horns are factory fitted with the correct geometry to allow servo flush servo installation using 10mm or thinner servos, though maximum servo thickness is 13mm in flap bay and 12mm in aileron making a huge range of servos possible.

Joiner
Massive is the only way to describe this part. It's just over 35 x 12mm and is designed to be available as an optional solid UD carbon part for light DS. The joiner system is of the floating type with a good fit in the wing boxes and loosely through the fuselage.

Tailplane
Again the airfoils were specifically designed for the tail plane and this time for maximum control response with minimum deflection. At 10%, the tail plane section is thicker than is the norm but the infinitesimal increase in drag is easily offset by the increased control response for less deflection and the overall increase in strength.
To further increase the efficiency, pitch control is accomplished by using an elevator. No wobbly all moving tail here. The elevator is driven by either an optional ball raced bell crank from a servo in the fuse, or where ultimate control is required a servo can be placed in a hatch through the fin to give direct elevator control. The tails remain removable for convenient storage.

Fuselage
Not only nice looking, but strong, light, and stiff with Carbon/Kevlar reinforcement, giving all-important resilience in the boom. Nose area is 2.4 GHz friendly with easy access to the radio and ballast is through a conventional canopy type hatch. Mini 12mm servos fit easily using a simple ply radio try. (Laser cut versions are available) Snakes are pre fitted in the fuse. These are all positioned to take the "head scratching" out of installing the radio gear.

The rudder is designed large enough to be effective for both aerobatics and slow landing speeds. The ballast tube is designed to take up to 8 x19mm brass slugs and will easily hold more 650g, optional ballast in the wings increases this to nearly 1kg if you think you need it!

Schwerpunkt
